About the Institute
What it is, in one paragraph
The Bezalel Institute is the house of the House's innovators and inventors — the platform where the world's greatest brains are produced, and from which all manner of works are birthed. It takes in people with the gift and the hunger, forms them by making — in cohorts, under masters, on works the House actually needs, with the work as the only test — and sends them out through two doors: into the House's own works, and into every sphere of the world as the House's dominion. It learns (the Knowledge Harness is its engine), it makes (the works are its hands), and it teaches (the Makers' School is its heart, and the Code Academy rises there as its first faculty). It is not the School of Divinity, which forms the minister; not WOT-ISLT, which forms the leader; not the Foundation School, which is the gate of the House. It sits beside them, and it is the only body in the House whose product is an inventor and a thing that ships.
Why Bezalel — the pattern the name carries
The name is not decoration. Exodus gives five things about the man, and each one is a law of the Institute.
He was shown a pattern before he made anything. "According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle … even so shall ye make it" (Exodus 25:9). Bezalel did not invent the tabernacle; he made what was shown. So the Institute makes what the President shows. Every work begins with a written pattern from him — what it is for, what done looks like, what is off limits — before a hand moves.
He was filled to make, with four named faculties. Wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and workmanship — and the fourth word is the point. The Institute's excellence is not in what it knows but in what it makes. Knowledge that has not become a work is not yet the Institute's product.
He devised cunning works — machashabah, things devised, thought out, that did not exist before. This is the President's word: "things that will come up that the world hasn't seen yet." The Institute is where the House's inventing happens.
He had a partner from another tribe. Aholiab of Dan stood beside Bezalel of Judah. The Institute is not one man's workshop; from the first day it has a second named head, and the President's first ruling on the Institute is to name that man.
He was given the heart to teach. Exodus 35:34 adds the gift that turns a craftsman into an institute: "that he may teach, both he, and Aholiab." Everything the Institute makes, it teaches someone else to make. That is what makes it an institute and not a workshop — and it is why "all manner of workmanship" in Exodus 31 becomes, in the President's mouth, "all manner of works birthed from here." The man is formed first; the works come out of the man.
The four marks
Every work of the House carries one of four marks. They are the President’s doctrine of honesty about what the House makes, and the register exists so the House never says the higher mark of the lower thing.
- Made for the House — another maker's product, chosen and configured by the House.
- Assembled by the House — others' components, put together, finished and warranted under the House's name.
- Designed by the House — the House's own design, built by a contract maker.
- Made by the House — the House's design in the House's works.
